History
Tomos was among the last factories still building true mopeds before production ended in the 2010s. US buyers should know their engine year: A35 (reed-valve, SHA carb) vs A55 (Revival — piston-port, PHVA carb). Both use chain final drive and an automatic two-speed transmission — not a belt, not a scooter CVT.
Slovenian build quality is the draw. Frames flex less than bargain 1970s imports, and the trans holds up to teenage abuse when chain tension and gearbox ATF changes happen on schedule. Revival models look modern but still pedal-start like a classic moped should.
Tomos prices climbed after the factory closed. A running A35 is now a serious purchase, not a $200 barn find. Parts remain available through US Tomos specialists and EU sellers who still stock OEM gaskets and cables.
Service habit that matters: set chain slack to spec and use the correct ATF in the gearbox. Revival owners who treat it like a scooter CVT and ignore the chain learn expensive lessons fast.
