History
Sparta Motors built motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds in Holland from the 1930s onward. In 1976, United Mopeds began importing Foxi/Sparta bikes to the US — the Foxi name was American-only and never appeared on European-market Sparta badges. Pre-1976 proto frames in Holland foreshadow the US models.
US lineups included the Foxi GT Sport, Foxi Deluxe Automatik, Sparta Buddy, and Sparta De Luxe. KTM also built a Foxi Deluxe Automatik on a unique frame originally designed for Puch mounts; they kept the frame and adapted Sachs with a bracket — unbolt it and an E50 or ZA50 can fit. Only KTM Foxi frames have true Puch engine mounts.
Most Foxi/Sparta bikes run the Sachs 504/1A — 47cc, one-speed, double-chain pedal and drive, one-piece cylinder and head, Bosch or Motoplat ignition, and 16-inch LeuLeu spokes. The 504 differs from the 505: no integral pedals, separate pedal chain. Restricted 20 mph and faster 30 mph (40 kph) variants differ by Bing carb and exhaust header size.
Stamped two-piece Sparta frames join with only four M8 bolts — they loosen and crack. Torque and inspect the frame joint every season. One-piece Sachs barrels make decarbonizing and freeing seized engines harder than on two-piece jug bikes.
